Welcome to my website

Welcome to my website–I’m so happy you found me!

People ask me, with all I have going on—raising a family, managing a busy legal career, and the seemingly endless demands of homeownership—why the heck I write. The answer is simple: because I have so much to say on so many topics and have this compelling need to share it with at least one other living, breathing human being (bots visiting my website don’t count!).

My primary goal isn’t to convince people of my point of view—I spend enough time doing that in my day job as an attorney. Instead, I want to provoke meaningful thought and maybe start an interesting conversation on my website. Or trigger one of my readers to point out an error in my own thinking; contrary to what my teenage kids would say, I’m happy to admit it when I’m wrong. And, apart from all that, I get no greater joy than making people laugh, so hopefully something I write will brighten your day.
So, what do I like to write about? Mostly family stuff, spirituality, current events, and parenting, and I love writing about food (it’s a Greek thing). Also, I enjoy sharing stories about growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s. I just think that was such a great time to be a kid and to come of age. And, by the way, I adamantly believe that the music from the ‘60s and ‘70s just blows away the so-called “music” that they’re producing these days. Okay, I’m done wallowing in my status as an unapologetic Baby Boomer … at least for now.

And last, but certainly not least, here’s what you won’t find on my website: you won’t be reading essays or other material that contains profanity, promiscuity, or lack of civility. That’s because everything I write, and everything I do, is intended to glorify God and advance Jesus’ message of love, humility, and kindness to others. Also, I firmly believe that vulgar and mean-spirited content is available in disturbing abundance elsewhere on the web and is only good for cheap laughs or bringing people down. And it’s boring. In contrast, what I share is designed to entertain, inform, and inspire you to be joyful, enriched, and the best version of yourself possible.

Anyway, it would be great to hear from you.

Happy reading!

"This entertaining retelling of beloved Bible stories brings each character to life, highlighting their humanity—and their relevance to today's teens."

—Christina Ray Stanton, Award-winning author of Out of the Shadow of 9/11, and former Director of Missions at Redeemer Presbyterian Church (Founder, Timothy Keller)

"With generous portions of humility, good humor and (always) love, Demetros gives parents a soulful resource to discuss God ... and the things in life that truly matter ... with their own teenagers. Certain to deepen their relationships with one another, if not God as well."

Dr. Andrew W. Armstrong, Senior Pastor, First Church, Nashua, NH (Congregational ACC)

"Demetros retells Biblical stories in a clear, entertaining way and connects them to young people’s contemporary lives ... [He] writes with the voice of authority ... [b]ut he never talks down to his audience, and with the book divided into 61 short chapters, he does not run the risk of boring kids with long, tiring explanations. Score: 9.25 out 10."

—The BookLife Prize

“I love this book! … Spencer Demetros writes with the wry wit and clever turn of phrase that only a dad can capture telling stories to his kids. At the same time, he throws in healthy doses of solid theology, paving the way for deeper questions about God, ourselves, and our faith. … People of all ages, but especially … those ages 13 to 23, could find great insight into God and be drawn into the Bible by reading this book.”

—Jack Williamson, Minister, Conejo Valley Church of Christ, Thousand Oaks, CA

"As a pastor, I am often asked by parents of teens: 'Where do I begin teaching my child the Bible?' Spencer Demetros has adventurously embarked on an answer in his book: The Bible: Enter Here ... Spencer has captured the stabilizing sound of the Gospel in ... language our teens will understand and enjoy. This book is a launching pad for healthy communication with our teenagers which is key to their flourishing as young adults..."

The Bible’s Ten Fundamental Principals

I wrote The Bible: Enter Here to answer God’s call to bring the Bible to teenagers and young adults—including my own children—so they can hear God’s Word in a way that is straightforward, entertaining, and relatable. In the process, it sent me on one of the richest...

MY INSPIRATION FOR THE BOOK?

A PICTURE SPEAKS A THOUSAND WORDS!

A wise old philosopher (I think it was Forrest Gump) once said: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” I think the same can be said for kids. Certainly, when my wife, Catherine, and I had our twins, we had no idea what we were going to get. Just in case you haven’t figured it out yet, Catherine is the one in the picture rolling her eyes, not just at the twins’ typical antics, but at her devoted husband who wasn’t just tolerating, but enjoying said antics, at a very elaborate family wedding we were attending.

As for “what we got” with our twins: two highly spirited, extraordinarily willful, and comical beings who ensure that there is never a dull moment in the Demetros household. Great qualities, but sometimes they made our nightly Bible studies challenging, to say the least. But let me start from the beginning . . .

Writer

Truth be told, I was never one of those people who had a life-long dream of becoming a famous author—or even an unfamous one. While writing isn’t new to me—I write for both my day job and for fun—actually sitting down and writing a book? That wasn’t on my bucket list. The reason I wrote The Bible: Enter Here was because I had something important to say and I felt God was calling me to do this—part of his plan for my life. And just like when he ordered Moses from a burning bush in the desert to lead his people out of Egypt, the Lord wasn’t going to take no for an answer.

Father

As the father of teenagers, I have a front-row seat to what’s going on with today’s young people. And I’m saddened by the number of kids these days who suffer from severe depression, anxiety, or prolonged feelings of hopelessness. Of course, life has always been hard for people of all ages—it’s just part of living in our imperfect world. And teens, in particular, have always had their share of emotional and psychological pain and despair as they transition from being children to adults. But things seem particularly bad now, certainly worse than when I was a kid. I’m convinced that the reason is because we’ve lost our way. As a society, we’ve taken God out of the equation—to the point that the mere mention of his name is a lightning rod for criticism, ridicule, and even scorn. So, I’m committed to raising my children with Jesus in their lives and, to the extent I can, bringing his message back into the mainstream and into the lives of regular kids. I believe everything that has happened in my life has prepared me for this important mission.

Speaker

My work as a trial lawyer taught me to communicate whatever position I was advocating clearly, forcefully, and with the utmost honesty and integrity. I believe God is harnessing that training, along with my irreverent sense of humor, in his call for me to share a fresh and compelling perspective on Jesus’ message of love, humility, discipline, and surrender to our Heavenly Father.
