Book Q & A

What was your inspiration for writing this book?

The Bible: Enter Here was inspired by my own children. Ever since they were babies, they loved the children’s Bibles that my wife and I would read with them. But when Coco and Christopher hit their preteen years, we tried reading the actual Bible during our nightly devotional time. That’s when things started going downhill. The kids found the text dry and often difficult to understand, and they began to lose interest. So, I looked for a book that told the stories in a straightforward and entertaining way—a book that could engage and inspire them. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I started writing. This book is the result!

Is your book a teen Bible?

No. There are already plenty of great Bibles available that have commentary for teens and young adults. The Bible: Enter Here doesn’t just reprint the Bible text. It tells the stories in a way that will appeal to readers by bringing the Biblical cast to life. The characters share conversations, thoughts, and feelings with each other and readers—in real time—as the amazing events chronicled in the Bible unfold. As real people with very relatable emotions, doubts, hopes, and dreams, the key figures in both the Old and New Testament will draw readers in and lift them up.
This book is intended, as the title suggests, to give teens and young adults an entryway into the Holy Bible. The stories are a mirror that reflects readers’ own thoughts, feelings, and experiences, as well as a window that offers them a view into the biblical teachings that are so vitally important to spiritual growth.

Give an example of how this book brings the Bible's characters to life.

Peter’s imagined diary entries are some of my favorite chapters. Peter opens up about his thoughts and feelings as he follows Jesus on his journey on Earth and into everlasting life. From his awestruck first impression of the young carpenter he meets in his fishing village to the utter torment he feels after denying Jesus three times, Peter offers a voice that shares the truths we all grapple with.

Do you veer off from the Bible’s content so that the book might be described as fiction?

No. The Bible: Enter Here stays true to the historical accounts contained in the Holy Bible. And all of Jesus’ teachings presented in the book are aligned with those in scripture. The book also has its fair share of quotes taken directly from the Bible, to reveal the power of God’s words.

What qualifies you to write this book?

I’ve asked myself that question many times. Although I’ve studied the Bible and countless books on Christianity for most of my life, I’m not a professional theologian or minister. But in addition to being a father who is determined to raise my children to know Jesus’ teachings, I’m an attorney. In my day-job, I need to cut through piles of information and boil it down to the relevant facts. Then, I have to share my conclusions based on those facts in a clear and convincing way. I believe God called me to write this book so he could tap into these skills to present matters of faith to a skeptical audience. And who is more skeptical than a teenager? I knew that the two teens I live with would reject any teaching or viewpoint that is at odds with their sense of logic or truth.
Apart from all that, my greatest joy in life has been to tell stories and make people laugh.

Is 'The Bible: Enter Here' coming from the perspective of any specific Christian denomination?

The Bible: Enter Here is entirely nondenominational. I grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church. But in my adult life, I also attended Protestant, Evangelical, and Catholic churches. These days, my family and I are members of a Congregational church in our hometown. So, my Christian perspective is not rooted in any one denomination—this book is for all Christians or anyone who is seeking the one true God.

What is the main takeaway for readers?

The world’s formula for happiness and fulfillment doesn’t work. It only leaves us feeling empty, alone, and without hope. I hope readers find themselves—as I still do every day—realizing that the one true path to a joyful, meaningful, and eternal life is by surrendering ourselves to God and living in his light. And the Bible gives us the roadmap for getting there.

Is there a separate takeaway for Christian leaders, educators, parents?

I worry that we’re losing our kids. There are so many soul-crushing influences in our culture that are causing them to turn their backs on God. It’s easy to say we need to get them back in church, back to reading God’s Word, and back to living Christian lives. But to get there, we need to do things differently than we’ve done in the past. We can begin by rethinking how we’re presenting God’s message to our young people. We should be 100 percent honest, straightforward, relatable, and even entertaining, or our kids aren’t going to pay attention. I hope this book can be just one of the tools that will help bring our young people back to God’s Word and to a life in Christ.
